At the Alemany Farmers Market
Sat 04 April 2009 by Ajay ShekhawatThe Alemany Market was busy, as usual. Here's today's haul from the market:
- 3lb onions ($1.00)
- 1lb walnuts (gotta get the good fats that come from nuts; $2.50)
- 1lb raisins (unwashed; have stems, but for $2? Gimme!)
- 1 head cauliflower ($1)
- 2lb potatoes (red and russett; $1.00)
- 1lb broccoli ($1.00)
- 2lb navel oranges (extra sweet, the lady promised! $1.50)
- 2lb organic fuji apples ($2.00)
- 1 bunch green onions ($1.00)
- 1.5lb green peppers ($1.50)
All in all, spent $14.50 . Since dinner is about $3/day, I still have some moolah leftover for some essentials, like tomatoes.
There's trouble on the horizon. I'm running out of milkĀ (my morning does not start until I've had a cup of black tea, brewed with milk and sugar). And I don't have much pita bread left, an essential since I like to avoid rice. For the milk, I get Clover organic milk, about $2.49. And I'll have to run down to the Mexican grocery store at the corner of Mission & 16th to see if they have whole-wheat tortillas.
Update 2009/04/04 7:45pm: I went scrounging around for the remaining stuff. I got tomatoes on the vine at the Mi Tierra market for $0.99/lb (2.5lbs) ; a bag of 24 corn tortillas for $4.00 ; bunch of cilantro for $0.34 ; 1lb red bell peppers for $0.99/lb ; 1.5lb carrots for $1 or so. Then I hit Rainbow Grocery , where I found the milk on sale for $1.99! I also picked up some '6-grain cereal' for $2.00 and 1lb of moong beans to sprout. Sprouted moong are very good for you, and will be a great addition to my salads.
